Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s 2017 Republican opponent broke his silence Friday on the recent scandals in the Commonwealth.

Former Republican National Committee Chairman and 2017 Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Ed Gillespie spoke out on the scandals that have engulfed Virginia’s executive branch, during a panel at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC. (RELATED: Justin Fairfax Employer Puts Him On Leave After Multiple Sexual Assault Allegations)

“For Virginians, this is a very painful time,” Gillespie said. “This doesn’t reflect the Virginia I know.”

In his comments, Gillespie also discussed Virginia’s tenuous history with racial issues.

“Virginia and Virginians from our very founding as a country have been at the forefront of American history,” he continued. “That doesn’t mean we’ve always been on the right side of American history. In fact, we’ve been on the wrong side many times.”

Gillespie did not mention Northam or any other Virginia politician by name.

Northam soundly defeated Gillespie by a margin of roughly 54-45 percent in November 2017, in a campaign where Gillespie was repeatedly portrayed by Northam allies as racially insensitive.
