Matthew and I are learning our film Serenity isn’t easily broken down into sound bites. I really like movies like that, but just in case I am in the minority, here are some reasons why I think you should see it: I find Serenity to be a thrilling, ambitious, violent, spiritual, erotic, charged, dark, damning, contradictory, maddening, lushly intelligent film from the brilliant mind of Steven Knight. It asks a lot of the audience. It exists outside cut-and-dry, black-and-white moralizing, beyond the realm of “thumbs up” and “thumbs down,” “it sucked,” “it was bad-ass,” etc. It will need some analysis and conversation after. Good. Serenity is a sexy, surreal, modern noir for grown ups who are into things that don’t come standard. If that sounds like you, I hope you’ll consider giving us your time and attention. Promoting her upcoming film, “Serenity,” starring herself and Matthew McConaughey, Hathaway told DeGeneres that a night of hard drinking with her costar prompted her to kick the habit.

“We drank the night away,” Hathaway recalled of one night during filming. “Then I had to go to a meeting with Steven Knight, our director, the next day. I was just kind of — have you guys ever had to do a meeting hungover? And so, I was just kind of, like, stumbling with one eye open and I was trying to convince him certain things about my character.”

Hathaway added that being a mom also played a role in wanting to quit.

“I quit drinking back in October,” she said, claiming the hiatus will last until her baby boy is a legal adult. “I’m going to stop drinking while my son is living in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it, and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the times in the morning. I did one school run where I dropped him off at school — I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover — and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one.”
