Jeanne Shaheen Praises Nikki Haley And Wants A Replacement Just Like Her
Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire praised outgoing U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley for her accomplishments, on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Wednesday, and said her replacement should be just like her.
Haley announced her resignation as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations on Tuesday, but will stay on until the end of the year. President Donald Trump claimed he knew about her impending departure before the announcement and said Haley expressed a desire to leave the job six months ago.
“I was surprised, like so many others at Ambassador Haley’s resignation. I think she’s done a good job,” Shaheen said. (RELATED: Trump Is Considering Five Candidates To Replace Nikki Haley At The UN)
“I haven’t agreed with her on everything, but basically I agree with what your analysis was this morning,” she said. “I think we need an ambassador to replace her who shares the views that she represented — who understands the importance of the U.N., who understands the importance of America in the world, who’s going to stand up for human rights and for the values of freedom and liberty for all peoples of the world and who’s going to stand up to dictators. And she did a very good job at that.”
Host Joe Scarborough wanted Shaheen to speculate on who Trump will pick as a replacement, but she refused and instead chose to compliment Haley again.
“I’m not going to speak to specifics because I’m not going to speculate on who’s going to be nominated. But I think someone who represents that more traditional foreign policy, as Nikki Haley did, is the kind of person that I want to see nominated,” Shaheen said.
“Again, someone who understands the importance of standing up for human rights, of standing up to dictators because too often this White House has sent a mixed message about those issues,” she added.
