Washington Post Owner Jeff Bezos Warns Against Trump’s Dangerous Demonization Of The Media

Washington Post owner and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos addressed President Donald Trump’s tension with the media at the Economic Club of Washington Thursday and said his attacks against the press are “dangerous.”

Bezos claimed it’s a “mistake” for any politician to attack the press and said Trump should be thankful for the media’s heavy scrutiny, according to Reuters. (RELATED: Washington Post Responds To Trump’s Amazon Tweets Through CNN)

“[What Trump] should say is, ‘This is right, this is good. I am glad I am being scrutinized,’ and that would be so secure and confident,'” Bezos said. “But it is really dangerous to demonize the media. It is dangerous to call the media lowlifes, it is dangerous to say that they are the enemy of the people.”

This isn’t the first time Bezos and Trump have called one another out in public. Trump has repeatedly suggested The Washington Post should register as an Amazon lobbyist, despite the paper’s claims of editorial independence from Bezos. He’s also reportedly discussed the idea of raising taxes on Amazon, to help offset any negative effect on small businesses and retail stores.

The Washington Post has seemingly hit back at the White House, by taking a hard line against the president in its news headlines and in its op-ed selections.

Bezos remained optimistic about the future of the press, however, and said the media will survive the Trump presidency.

“The media is going to be fine. We’re going to push through this,” Bezos said at the Economic Club Thursday.
