Father Paul Scalia Explains The Meaning Of Christmas [VIDEO]
The challenge of a practicing Christian who celebrates Christmas is finding a certain detachment from the traditional gifting and partying prominent in our cultural celebration of Dec. 25, Fr. Paul D. Scalia told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Scalia encourages us to consider how God sent his son to enter into this barren, desolate and cold world and what that means.
As for the cultural reticence to mention Christmas, he says people shouldn’t be bashful to say “Merry Christmas” since it is merely a non-offensive invitation to rejoice with believers.
Today, Scalia is the Episcopal Vicar for Clergy in the Archdiocese of Arlington, Virginia, where he assists the local Bishop in his care for priests and deacons. He says in this exclusive video interview for TheDCNF that he knew he wanted to enter the priesthood when he was in the eighth grade.
The son of former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, he grew up in the Washington, D.C., area and even interned at the Heritage Foundation. Ordained in 1996, he saw how helping bring greater appreciation of the faith can offer peace, fulfillment and spiritual freedom more sustaining than those who toil in political and cultural endeavors.
His new book, “That Nothing May Be Lost,” is a collection of Fr. Scalia’s short writings about faith, the gospels, the Sacraments and more from over 20 years.
The book even includes the moving homily he gave for his father’s funeral Mass on Feb. 20, 2016. He says he has heard from people across the world and attributes the peacefulness, tranquility and resonance of the mass to many people praying for what helped make the beauty of the Catholic Mass for his father be experienced by so many.
Father Scalia also talks in the interview about our technological society where many seem imbued with the notion that human nature is malleable. He additionally discusses the underlying conflict about whether man’s rights come from God or government. He brings a fresh and unique perspective to this and many controversies.
